Real vs remix: the real winner

“Rangeela re…..” blared out from a sound box of a puja pandal. The trendy rendition of the song made an elderly lady comment,”Uff itne achche gaane ka kya haal kiya hai!”(What have they made of such a beautiful song).What is actually a remix ? In simple words, its some trendy words, some hip hop beats and a new look mixed together and a remix is ready to be served. But a question arises as to which will last in the long run – real music or its remix. When we talk of who is the actual winner in the battle between real and remix,there are two schools of thought surrounding the debate.

The remix culture has brought back the melody of the era of the nightingles to the ears of the youth .The old songs are packaged in a better manner by simply changing the dynamics, pitch, tempo or by adding or subtracting certain elements to make it more appealing to the youngsters. The youth today are gulping down the dose of remixes served on their platter. The music industry today is flooded with remixes of all kinds with a glamorous look and feel. The remix industry has given the songs of the yester years a make over to mesmerize the audience. It has helped the youngsters to become familiar to the songs of the era of their granny. The songs which were earlier played on gramophones can now be heard playing on the CD players of every house in the neighbourhood. Every youngsters can be heard humming a remixed version of a song about 20-30 years old. In a way remixes keep them rooted to their country’s rich heritage of music.

The increasing number of remixes raises the question about the competency of the musicians to produce new musical masterpieces. The older generation feels that there is an erosion of new creative ideas and thus they are copying the old songs and tampering with them. Most of them feel that the remixed version is actually a wastage of a beautiful song sung by stalwarts of the industry.

In the race between real vs. remix, real will certainly triumph over remixes as all remixes are born of the real music.
